News & EventsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 9, 2006
Local Man is National Cook-off Finalist Cedar Rapids, IA – Joe Stutler of Cedar Rapids has been selected as one of the 10 finalists in a national cooking competition. The competition, The 2006 Cooking With Beer Challenge, is sponsored by the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA). He will travel to New York City at the end of November and prepare his Oatmeal Stout Brownies (a recipe he developed to pair with his recent interpretation of a ‘Bride Ale’ created for a friend’s wedding.) Other entries in the competition include deserts, salads, and entrées, with finalists coming from across the county – from Connecticut to California. The winner receives a cash prize and a trip to Cancun. Details of the competition can be found at http://www.eatbeer.org/. Joe loves to cook and he’s a home brewer and beer aficionado. He began sharing his expertise by teaching beer appreciation classes through Kirkwood’s Continuing Education division. He has lately begun specializing in beer-food pairings and cooking with beer as a featured ingredient. “It made sense to combine a couple of my passions – food and beer – and teaching others helps me hone my skills. I’m in the process of developing Beer University (http://www.beer-u.com), an education, training, and advocacy organization focused on beer. I’ve provided beer-related technical, culinary, and marketing services and assistance to individuals, businesses, and breweries”, Joe said. “Some of my beers, meads, and ciders have won awards (including 2 Bronze’s at the 2006 Iowa State Fair), and I brought home a 2nd and 3rd place for two of my food entries from the Iowa State Fair this year. I’m also working on a cookbook – working title: “Brewed and Food – A Beer-Lover’s Cookbook”. Founded in 1938 as a trade association for the nations' beer distributors, the purpose of NBWA is to advocate before government and the public on behalf of its members - nearly 1,900 family businesses that distribute beer; to encourage the responsible consumption of beer; and to provide programs and services that will enhance distributors' efficiency and effectiveness.
