Beer Chef Joe Stutler & New Third Base Brewery Team Up for St. Patrick’s Day

Cedar Rapids, IA - Beer Chef Joe Stutler and the new Third Base Sports Bar and Brewery have teamed up to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with traditional Irish fare – with a twist. Stutler and Third Base’s Tim ‘Frenchy’ Fry and his staff will be preparing a Savory Irish Stew incorporating the brewery’s own Black Cobra Stout and other ales. Along with the stew, homemade Irish brown beer bread and a special desert will be featured. Preparations will begin on Friday, March 16 to allow time for the flavors to develop, and the Irish meal will be the special of the day on March 17.

Stutler is no stranger to the brewery. “I’ve been working with Brewmaster Travis Scheidecker to develop some of their seasonal beers for some time, and many of the staff are my friends. They usually get to try my creations while I’m still developing them, and have at times been the inspiration for some of them. It’ll be great to work with them in their kitchen!” Stutler said. His Oatmeal Stout Brownies, developed to pair with a beer he and Scheidecker created for a staff member’s nuptials last year, earned him a trip to New York City to compete in the 2006 Cooking With Beer Challenge finals.

Scheidecker said the collaboration comes at a perfect time. “From the start of my brewing career Joe has been a tremendous resource. St Patty’s Day offers a perfect opportunity to try something new in the kitchen. I can’t wait to try it, and what a better way to celebrate the opening of our new brewery than to celebrate a day traditionally associated with good beer, good food, and good times.”

Stutler is an award-winning cook, brewer, and educator, and his recipes have been featured both nationally and locally. He began sharing his expertise by teaching beer appreciation classes through Kirkwood’s Continuing Education division and cooking classes with Hy-Vee. His culinary specialization is in beer-food pairings and cooking with beer as a featured ingredient. “It made sense to combine a couple of my passions – food and beer – and teaching others helps me hone my skills.” He founded Beer University (http://www.beer-u.com), as an education, training, and advocacy organization focused on beer. “Beer is the new wine”, Stutler said, “and Iowa is catching up to the trend that’s been building on the coasts for some time.”

Third Base Sports Bar and Brewery, formerly Cedar Brewing Company, is located at 500 Blairs Ferry Road in Northeast Cedar Rapids, across from Rockwell Collins. Third Base is the only fully operational brewery in Cedar Rapids, and plans to serve their award-winning beers at their other locations throughout Eastern Iowa in the near future. The newly-renovated brewery and bar features daily lunch specials, numerous High Definition TV’s for catching all the games, NTN Trivia and Poker, and, of course, some great beers.
